Teeth Whitening

Do you have stained teeth that make you feel self-conscious about smiling? Teeth whitening can be a good solution for certain types of tooth staining.

Coffee, tea, smoking and wine – these are just a few of life’s little pleasures that can, over time, stain your teeth and leave you feeling less attractive.

Teeth whitening is a safe procedure that can lighten the colour of your teeth by using a safe dental bleaching agent. Individual results vary and are based on your initial tooth colour and the nature of your tooth staining. Teeth whitening is a great way to give a youthful look to your appearance.

Long Lasting Results

The treatment

We offer home whitening using custom made trays and whitening gels. We have found this method provides the best results for quickly and safely removing stains, without damaging your teeth. We’ve whitened thousands of smiles and seen patients grow in confidence thanks to a brighter, whiter smile..

You’ll need to have an initial consultation before you can go ahead with teeth whitening treatment, to double check your teeth are suitable. During this consultation, we will…

  • Check that your teeth and gums are healthy and suitable for whitening
  • Discuss the teeth whitening process with you
  • Give you an idea of how long treatment will take.

Maximising the results

If you care for your teeth well after treatment, the results from teeth whitening can last for some time. To maximise the results of treatment, we recommend:
  • Brushing your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste for two minutes, twice a day, to remove daily stains that build up on your teeth
  • Flossing every day
  • Regularly visiting the hygienist for a scale and polish
  • Stopping or at least cutting down on smoking
  • Cutting back on drinks which can stain your teeth, such as tea, coffee and red wine

Top-up kits are also available to maintain your new brighter smile. Your dentist will explain how to care for your smile once you’ve had the treatment.

Am I eligible for teeth whitening?

If your dentist decides that you are not suitable for teeth whitening, you could consider other cosmetic options including veneers or crowns for particularly discoloured or damaged teeth.

Your dentist will explain all your options to you during your consultation.

  • You need to be 18 or over to have teeth whitening
  • Your teeth and gums must be healthy, which your dentist will check during your consultation
  • We do not advise teeth whitening If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, because it’s not clear whether the whitening products can affect the baby
  • Teeth whitening won’t lighten the colour of any crowns, veneers, bridges or dentures
Can I have my teeth whitened?

You will initially be invited to attend the practice for a free consultation appointment, where we will see if your mouth is suitable for teeth whitening. We will expect you to have a clean and healthy mouth and a good oral hygiene routine. If your dentist feels you are suitable, you will have an impression taken of your mouth to allow tooth whitening trays to be custom made to fit.

Who can perform teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a form of dentistry and should only be performed by a dentist or another regulated dental professional. All of our dentists and dental therapists are qualified to perform the procedure. Some beauty salons offer teeth whitening, but this is illegal if there’s no dental professional present, and it may put your oral health at risk. You can also buy DIY home teeth whitening kits but also carry risks to your oral health.

How white will my teeth become?
There is a limit to how white your teeth will become, but you should expect your teeth to lighten by at least 3-4 shades. The best results are usually seen after two to three weeks of constant use.
How soon will I see the results?
Some people notice the results after only one night, others will require 2-3 weeks before an improvement is noticed.
What is the gel actually doing to my teeth?
The gel contains a product called hydrogen peroxide, which soaks into the teeth and breaks down the stains using oxygen, to whiten your teeth.
Will it hurt?
The tooth whitening will cause sensitivity in your teeth, both during the treatment process and for a few days after. The sensitivity is usually only mild and we recommend that you use either Sensodyne or Colgate Sensitive Toothpaste during the whitening process. If the sensitivity is severe, we suggest that you leave the whitening trays out for a few nights, until the sensitivity is better. We also suggest that you refrain from drinking ice cold or very hot foods and drinks during sensitivity to minimise the sensitive feeling.
Will the gel whiten my crowns, white fillings or false teeth?
No, the gel will only white real teeth. It will not harm crowns, white fillings or false teeth, but these may require to be replaced once tooth whitening is complete to improve the colour match. Your dentist will discuss this with you in more detail.
What happens if I swallow the gel?
In small amounts, the gel is completely harmless, although you may experience an unpleasant taste. If you swallow large amounts of the gel, we recommend that you seek medical advice.
Are the results permanent?
Yes and No. The results can be permanent, however if your teeth are stained due to smoking or drinking then the teeth can gradually discolour again over time. We recommend that you keep the tooth whitening trays and repeat the process for a few nights every couple of years. You can buy individual syringes of tooth whitening gel from us.
What happens if I run out of whitening gel?
Your dentist will provide you with enough teeth whitening gel to last approximately 2 – 3 weeks, which is usually sufficient to whiten your teeth. If you require more gel, you can purchase additional individual syringes from the practice.
